چکیده

A Geographic Information Retrieval (GIR) model is defined and the architecture of a GIR system, named Geo-Finder, is described. The GIR system is constituted by two main modules. The geo-indexing module applies bipolar criteria to automatically identify the geo-reference focus (footprint) of textual documents. The geo-retrieval module applies a context dependent matching function to evaluate queries consisting of two orthogonal constraints, a content constraint and a spatial constraint; the spatial constraint is defined by modeling the user’s perception of geographic “closeness” between the documents’ footprint and the query footprint. For each retrieved document, two relevance scores are computed with respect to the two query conditions, that can be combined to generate an overall ranked list of documents in a flexible way, by allowing users to specify a trade off between them. Keywords— bipolar criteria evaluation, geo-footprint, geoindexing, geographic information retrieval, perception distance, spatial query evaluation.

Criteria of geographic relevance: an experimental study

The relevance of geographic information has become an emerging problem in geographic information science due to an enormous increase in volumes of data at high spatial, temporal, and semantic resolution, because of ever faster rates of new data capturing. At the same time, it is not clear whether the concept of relevance developed in information science and implemented for document-based inform...

Measuring Effectiveness of Geographic IR Systems in Digital Libraries - Evaluation Framework and Case Study

Common search engines process users’ queries (i.e., information needs) by retrieving documents from pre-built term-based indexes. For digital libraries, such approaches are limited regarding particular contexts, such as specialized collections (e.g., cultural heritage collections) or specific retrieval criteria (e.g., multidimensional criteria). In this paper, we consider Information Retrieval ...

GIR Experiments with Forostar at GeoCLEF 2007

In this paper we describe our Geographic Information Retrieval experiments with Forostar, our GIR application on the GeoCLEF 2007 corpus and query set. We compare the results from orthogonal text with no geographic entities and only geographic entities with standard text retrieval and combined text and geographic relevance methods. The text and named entity analysis and retrieval methods of For...
